Dodger, the best, most amazing, sweetest and most wonderful dog in the entire world died tonight.
Dodger the Boxer was an amazing dog. She was not only the Boxers and Buddies mascot, but the entire reason the organization existed.
When Dodger was 10 months old, her owners decided that they didn't want her anymore. There were several reasons of this: They wanted her to be an outside dog, apparently, Dodger didn't agree with this and chewed a fist-sized hole through their hot tub to express her displeasure. She was a typical puppy and didn't always come when called - so they owners would scream at her. They said she was untrainable and destructive.
They called me to ask how to get to the shelter. I gave them directions to my house instead. I called Boxer Rescue LA to see if they had room - of course they didn't - they already had 150 boxers looking for forever homes. Alarmed by the amount of dogs already looking for homes, I adopted Dodger myself and started volunteering at Boxer Rescue LA each week.
When I moved to Reno, I was appalled that there was no boxer rescue in Nevada - that meant that wonderful dogs like Dodger were dying for no reason, with no home, at a human's whim. So Boxers and Buddies was born.
Dodger was amazing - she raised thousands of dollars towards the rescue of Boxers by her antics, in the kissing booth, posing for pictures and by being one of the best ambassadors of Boxers that anyone could wish for. She loved all people - young and old, and wanted nothing more than a belly rub and to give you a lick.
Dodger completed basic obedience with me, then advanced, then canine good citizen, then tricks, then she became a certified seizure detection dog for Assistance Dogs International. She was employed by Hollywood Paws and appeared in made for tv movies, tv shows, commercials and print ads.
She did at least one training demo a week and loved performing in front of audiences. Dodger was one of a kind - a perfect boxer.
On July 29th, 7 year old Dodger wandered down the driveway - a place she NEVER went. She stepped into the road - not 3 feet away from our mailbox. There she was struck by a car, ending her fantastic life.
There is a lot of different things to thank Dodger for, but for me, personally, I want to thank her for being the perfect dog, perfect companion, best friend, co-worker and for teaching me how to love unconditionally.
Dodger, I love you with all my heart, I'm sorry I wasn't there to protect you in the end. There isn't a day that will go by that I won't think about you, miss you, love you and wish you were with me.
Wait at the rainbow bridge, sweetie - jump and spin and play and run, and know I will be there soon. I love you.
