Update: 5/6/10

Hi Sarah, this is Jeannie, we adopted Zeus (formerly Silas) last January.  He is the light of our lives, he's hilarious to watch peeling around and he's a real lunatic with his squeaky toys!  We haven't had one moment of heartache with him, he's a joy to be around.  There is only one development recently that I need your advice for.  We take him everywhere with us anytime we can.  He goes with us in the car all the time and has one of those safety blankets where he can lay out in the back seat or sit and look out the window.  He loves "going with".  But the last three times he's been in the car he starts violently shaking and hides under his safety blanket or jumps up front and shakes and cowers.  Today I had to return home with him because he was shaking so violently his teeth were chattering.  We have no idea what caused this sudden behavior change and I was hoping you could give us some advice on how to help him.  Thanks again for all you do and especially for Zeus, he's brought life back to our home!

Adoption Requirements:

• You must be 21 years of age

• All current pets in the household MUST be spayed/neutered and current on shots (yes, we do call and verify this information)

• We do not place female boxers with other female dogs

• Attendance at a professionally run obedience course is a requirement of adoption!

• We do not adopt out dogs as gifts

• All pets are family companions!

Update: 3/2/10

OMG!  Zeus (Silas) is settling in well.  He is a CRAZY boxer and we've been enjoying him tremendously.  We are stunned at how well behaved he is.  We planned on having to teach him how to sit and potty train and all the basic stuff but he sits politely several feet away from me while I fix his meals.  He sits and waits 5 seconds while looking only at my eyes while I hold his treat, sure didn't expect that!  I ate a hamburger and he sat staring at me and drooling but never once approached me and begged.  We go out back every hour or so to familiarize him with his yard and he's marked every single corner of the fences.  He's super-smart, too, I played "Find It" with his treats and it took only one time for him to know the term. I can't even say the word "find" without him running around to find his treat.

He sleeps in our bed at night and is trying to steal my side and I have to physically move him to the middle.  Stubborn boxer action for sure!  He's very insecure and follows us everywhere, even when he's finally asleep he'll bounce right up and follow whoever leaves the room.  We plan to take him for a ride today and we won't be leaving him alone for some time.  If I have errands, Scotty will stay with him and vice-versa.  There are around 40 toys scattered all over the house and he's carefully chosen each one from our old boxer's toy bins.  He whaps himself silly, he's hilarious...He's hyper for a couple hours and we play and play and play and then he crashes for about 10 minutes and back to hyper boy!  We're so happy with him, THANK YOU for saving his life.  We're already in love with him.  He's an absolute sweetheart!

Update 2/18/10

Dearest A.R.F. (Fresno) and Boxers and Buddies (Reno),

Please share this email with Stephanie in Dr. Richard Kahn's All Creatures Vet Clinic in Fresno.

My husband and I adopted Richard, aka Silas, and now Zeus from Boxers and Buddies in Reno.  He was the terribly injured young boxer that all of you had a hand in saving.  We can't begin to tell you how much we appreciate what you've done for him and for us.

We'd lost our beloved 11-1/2 year old boxer on January 29, 2009.  We grieved deeply and terribly and waited until we wouldn't be comparing a new dog with her.  In November of 2009 we began checking out rescued boxers but none of them were right for us.  Then on January 29, 2010, the exact day to the year of our beloved dog's death, I received an email from Adopt-A-Pet with "Silas's" picture.  We went to Boxers and Buddies in Reno to meet him.  He is the only dog we looked at.  He was frantic and hyper as any dog can be in a situation such as his but he seemed very sweet.  We adopted him and know this was meant to be.

Zeus now lives on 1/2 acre with a big grassy back yard.  He's managed to drag out tons of toys that we still had and they're all over the house and back yard.  He sleeps with us and when he's not going insane with squeaky toys and barrelling around the yard in joyous ecstacy with the neighbors kids, he's curled up in one of our arms on the couch.  We dearly love him already.

So when you have a really crappy day with difficult dogs and even more difficult humans, please know this:  YOU ARE ALL DEEPLY APPRECIATED FOR WHAT YOU DO ON A DAILY BASIS.  YOUR WORK CAN BE HARD AND THANKLESS BUT WE KNOW HOW WONDERFUL ALL OF YOU ARE:  THANK YOU TO:  Dr. Richard Kahn, Stephanie, and everyone at  All Creatures Vet Clinic, Jenna and everyone at A.R.F. in Fresno, and Sarah and everyone at Boxers and Buddies.  We'll never forget any of you and how happy you've made Zeus and my husband and me.

With love and gratitude,

Jeanine and Scotty Ford of Fallon, NV

Silas is a beautiful boy with a wonderful playful personality. He was rescued by Animal Rescue of Fresno from being euthanized. Silas had a broken leg that was splinted incorrectly and was healing incorrectly. ARF took Silas to the vet and the vet has corrected this problem with surgery. Silas is healing wonderfully. It appears to us he was either tied up or he's been living the rough life from the scars on his body. He plays so sweet that  you would never know he had a bad start in life. Silas would do best in a home without any cats. We are hoping Silas has warmed your heart. He wants to please you...he  enjoys a good car ride and walks on a leash.

If you're looking for a dog that will turn heads and you understand the boxer breed you consider giving this boy a loving forever home.

I'm interested in Silas
